The Surprising Joy Found Within Volunteering at Hot Lunch: A Full-Circle Moment

On January 7th, I had the incredible opportunity to return to St. Clement’s  School to read Brianna’s Brave Day at School to 40 kindergarteners. It was such a special moment to share this story, based on a real event from years ago when my son, then seven years old, bravely faced a conversation about adoption. Now at 20, he’s grown, but that memory, and the lessons we learned as a family, still hold so much meaning.

As I walked through the familiar halls of St. Clement’s, I couldn’t help but think back to those years when I made a conscious effort to be present at my kids’ school. Whether it was volunteering for hot lunch or simply showing up to catch a glimpse of them in their element, those moments brought me so much joy.

Interestingly, after that school reading, I went to my weekly yoga class. During that class it brought back so many memories of the many times I left my yoga class early, right before the blissful Shavasana, to make it to volunteer at St. Clement’s for “hot lunch duty” on time. At the time, it felt like a small sacrifice, but looking back, it was one of the best decisions I could have made. Those stolen moments, catching a glimpse of my kids with their friends or sneaking in an extra smile their way, were worth every skipped minute of relaxation on the mat.

And now, as I return to yoga regularly, I smile thinking about how much has come full circle. Who would have guessed that hot lunch duty and yoga would still be connected in my mind all these years later? The connection is clear: both were ways to nurture something important, be it my kids’ hearts or my own.

I’m deeply grateful for the choices I made to prioritize presence during my children’s younger years. It’s a reminder that the little things, volunteering at school, rescheduling a work meeting, or even leaving yoga early, can leave the biggest imprint on our hearts.

Who knew the surprising joy I’d find within reminiscing on working hot lunch at St. Clement’s School?
